Material statement. This statement sets out the recyclability and environmental credentials of the aluminium used in PO Box Designs products, to support specifiers and principals in material selection and sustainability rating submissions.

1. Aluminium — Key Environmental Credentials

Aluminium is uniquely well suited to sustainable architecture. The following credentials apply to the aluminium used across our planters, screening and balustrading:

CredentialDetail
Infinitely recyclableAluminium can be recycled repeatedly with no loss of quality or material properties.
Energy saving on recyclingRecycling uses ~5% of the energy of primary production — a saving of up to ~95%.
Emissions savingRecycling saves a comparable proportion of greenhouse gas emissions vs primary production.
High recovery ratesBuilding aluminium is recovered and recycled at high rates globally at end of life.
Durable & long-lifeCorrosion-resistant and long-lasting, reducing replacement over a building's life.
No landfill 'grave'As an architectural product, aluminium is recovered and re-melted, not landfilled.

Figures are industry data from the International Aluminium Institute and aluminium industry bodies, and relate to the material generally rather than a project-specific life-cycle assessment.

2. Recyclability of Our Products

Our products are made predominantly from aluminium, which is fully recyclable at end of life. Powder-coated aluminium can be processed through standard aluminium recycling streams. Because our products are bolt-together or welded aluminium assemblies with minimal mixed materials, they are straightforward to recover and recycle when a building is refurbished or reaches end of life.

3. Recycled Content

Commercially produced aluminium billet and extrusion typically contains a significant proportion of recycled content, and recycled-content options continue to grow. Where a project specifies a minimum recycled content or low-carbon aluminium, we can work with our supplier to source and document suitable material, subject to availability and lead time.

4. Environmental Product Declaration (EPD)

An Environmental Product Declaration is an independently verified, standardised (ISO 14025 / EN 15804) report of a product's life-cycle environmental impacts. EPDs are increasingly requested on Green Star and other rating projects.

Current position — PO Box Designs does not currently hold a certified product-specific EPD for its finished products. We can provide EPDs or environmental data published by our aluminium and finishing suppliers for the input materials, where available.

On request — for projects that require a product-specific EPD, we can discuss the requirement with the design team and, where warranted by project scale, work toward providing the appropriate documentation.

5. Supporting Your Rating Submission

To support a Green Star or other sustainability submission, we can provide: material composition information; supplier environmental data and any supplier EPDs for input aluminium; recycled-content information where available; powder-coat finish information; and end-of-life recyclability guidance. Contact us early in the design phase so we can align documentation with the relevant credits.

Material & sustainability data on request. For material, recyclability or EPD information to support your project, contact info@poboxdesigns.com.au.
